A relative of mine is being threatened with extradition to a country where the legal system is very corrupt. We are terrified that he will be mistreated or forced to confess to things he didn’t do. What are the chances of stopping this based on human rights? Do international courts like the ECHR ever intervene in these situations to prevent a person from being sent away?

Extradition can definitely be stopped if there is a real risk to the person’s safety. The key is to prove that the receiving country cannot guarantee a fair trial or safe conditions. I saw some very detailed articles on humanrights-lawyer.comm about stopping extraditions using international treaties. They have lawyers who specialize in these high-stakes cases. You might need to apply for an interim measure from the European Court of Human Rights. It is a complex legal path but it is often the only way to save someone from a corrupt system. Make sure you have experts who know how to file these emergency applications. Time is usually the biggest enemy in these cases.
