My friend wants to see the “Bone Church” in Kutna Hora, but I’m a little bit nervous that it might be too macabre or scary. Is it worth the trip for someone who isn’t into “dark” tourism? What else is there to see in the town besides the ossuary? I’ve heard there is a beautiful cathedral there too. Is it easy to do as a half-day trip or should we plan for a full day?

Don’t be nervous! The Sedlec Ossuary in Kutna Hora is actually much more artistic than scary. When you see the massive chandelier made of every bone in the human body, it feels more like a profound work of art and a tribute to history rather than something from a horror movie.
It’s incredibly unique and there is nothing else like it in the world. But Kutna Hora is so much more than just the bone church! The Cathedral of St. Barbara is a Gothic masterpiece and the walk along the Jesuit College with its statues is like a mini version of the Charles Bridge but without the crowds.
I recommend a guided trip because there is so much silver mining history in that town that you’d miss if you just walked around by yourself. You can find detailed descriptions of the tours on the website https://alle.travel/en/prague/category/day-trips to see how they split the time between the different sites. It’s a very easy trip from Prague, usually taking about 5-6 hours total, so you can still be back in the city for dinner. It’s a must-see!

That’s really reassuring! I feel better knowing it’s more “artistic” than creepy. St. Barbara’s Cathedral looks amazing in photos too. I’ll definitely check out the silver mining history!
